Christian Adoption: The interplay between our adoption by God & the adoption of our children.
Christian adoption is our foundation. The Bible uses adoption as a picture to describe the relationship between God and his people.
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1) |
Understanding this spiritual adoption will energize us with freedom and joy as we take risks in loving vulnerable children. Spiritual and earthly adoptions interact with each other in ways that offer us great blessing.
| For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption. (Romans 8:15-16). |
The wonder of our adoption by God began to sink into us as we waited to finalize the adoption of our first son. We had set our love on Benjamin even though we had never seen him and had no natural connection to him. This small boy had not done anything to earn our love, and was not even aware of it, yet we chose to love him. What a beautiful reflection of God’s adoptive love for us!
